National Service Scheme (NSS)

Students interested in social service and welfare by helping the less privileged people in society, team building, character formation and service to the college are encouraged to join the college unit of the NSS.

N.S.S. stands for National Service Scheme. In   India   the idea of involving students in the task of national service dates back to the times of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. The central theme, which he tried to impress upon his student audience time and again, was that they should always keep before them, their social responsibility.  He suggested that the students should do ‘ something positive so that the life of the villagers might be raised to a higher material and moral level. Thus the post-independence era was marked by an urge for introducing social service for students, both as a measure of educational reform and as a means to improve the quality of educated manpower. Thereby NSS was formally launched on 24th September 1969, the birth centenary year of the Father of the Nation. Therefore, 24th  September is celebrated every year as NSS day with appropriate programmes and activities.

The broad objectives of NSS are to:

  1. Understand the community in which they work.
  2. Understand themselves in relation to their community
  3. Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process
  4. Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
  5. Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems
  6. Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities
  7. Gain skills in mobilizing community participation
  8. Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude
  9. Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
  10. Practice national integration and social harmony.
We have the record, in our college NSS office, of different projects undertaken by our college unit since 1960s. Although at that time the NSS unit was not affiliated to the North Bengal University NSS unit. At present it is affiliated to the University NSS unit. And we have two NSS units in our college. It says that we have more than 100 volunteers in our college NSS units. Our college NSS units have undertaken several projects, every year we are going for camp for 7 to 10 days. Different types of activities are undertaken in the camp, which are considered as community service. Every year we are organizing blood donation camp in the campus, doing sapling plantation, observing different days, which are nationally and internationally important. At present our NSS volunteers are collecting old books from the students and the community at large, for its distribution among the poor and the needy, and thus we also cherish the view of our hon’ble President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s vision 2020, when   India   would become a developed nation.

Enrolment into the N.S.S. is on a voluntary basis. But, once you enroll yourself, you are expected to put in 120 hours of work a year. This may include on camp of 10 to 15 days. Every week on Saturday the NSS volunteers undertake different types of social services in and outside the college campus.
