 Fr. Adolfo Nicolas, SJ

Fr. Adolfo Nicolas, SJ, the 30th Superior General of the Jesuits (Society of Jesus), was born on 29th April 1936 in Palencia, Spain. He became a Jesuit in 1953 at the age of 17. After his early Jesuit training in Spain Fr. Nicolas went to Japan to study Philosophy, Theology and Japanese. He was ordained a Priest on 17th March 1967 in Japan. From 1968 to 1971 he did Master's in Theology at Gregorian University, Rome and then taught Theology at Sophia University, Japan from 1971 to 1978. He then served as the Director of East Asian Pastoral Institute, Manila from 1978 to 1984 and became the Rector of Jesuit Theologate, Kamishakuji, Japan in 1991. In 1993 he was appointed Provincial of Japan in which job he continued till 1999. After this Fr. Nicolas served the migrants as a Pastor in a parish between 2001 and 2004. In 2004 he was appointed Provincial of East Asia and Oceania until finally he was elected the Jesuit General on 19tr January 2008 at the General Congregation 35.

Fr. Adolfo Nicolas took over from Fr. Peter-Hans-Kolvenbach who in turn took charge from the exceptionally charismatic and inspiring Fr. Pedro Arrupe (1907-1991). Fr. Nicolas knows Spanish, Japanese, English, French and Italian. His challenge to all the young people is: "My invitation would be: go deep into anything. In other words, be good at something. Make sure you excel in one area to begin with. Put passion into it. Whatever be your ministry [work] pastoral, spiritual, social, leadership, educational, counseling aim at being the best in it. All this excellence has to be inspired by the Gospel, and only then will we make a difference".
